The Redeemer

The selection skips over some details: (a) the instructions that Naomi gives to Ruth about the the role of Boaz as their family’s "Redeemer"; (b) the meeting of Ruth and Boaz in his threshingfloow where Ruth practically asks Boaz to marry her; and (c) Boaz transacting for the right of redemption. This last is interesting because it gives us an idea of how rights are transferred in ancient Israel. Here, the sandal becomes a guarantee — some sort of certificate — that the right of being Naomi’s Goel (Redeemer) has been transferred to Boaz.

Ruth and Hesed

We read the book of Ruth today and tomorrow. The book became important because of the final genealogy which connects the son of Ruth and Boaz, Obed, to King David. But apart from that it is also the story of how a Moabitess becomes part of the family of Israel. Matthew remembers Ruth and Boaz in his genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Messiah.

The Judge Who Wanted Acceptance

The Judge Who Wanted Acceptance

The selection from Judges takes us to the tragic story of Jephta’s daughter. Jephta was an illegitimate son and was forced to live away from home by his brothers who didn’t want him around. He lived in exile so to speak working as a kind of mercenary. Israel was then at war with the Ammonites and the Israelites wanted someone to lead them. They negotiated with Jephta who accepted. It was after all an opportunity to vindicate himself against his own family.

The good news is that the land was indeed a land flowing with milk and honey, with abundance of resources. The bad news is that it is inhabited by people who are superior in size and stronger than Israel.
