Today is the Memorial of St. Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr. The readings for this day are the same from year to year. Read this article from 2009 about the readings of the day.

If the feast of St. Lawrence had not fallen on this day, we would be having the readings for the XIX Week, Wednesday, OT – Year 1. These are

  • Reading I:  Deuteronomy 34:1-12
  • Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 65
  • Gospel Reading: Matthew 18:15-20

The selection from Deuteronomy 34 is about the death of Moses.  He is first shown the extent of the land that the Israelites will reclaim before he died at 120 years “his eyes undimmed, his vigor unimpaired.”  The final redactor of Deuteronomy would add:  “Since then, there never has been a prophet in Israel similar to Moses, the man the Lord knew face to face”.  Not until the prophet from Nazareth would come though, the one with whom Moses and Elijah appear on a mountain and whom a voice from the Shekinah would present as “My Son, My Beloved.”

The Gospel selection is about forgiveness.  It continues the declaration that it is not the Father’s will that any of the little ones would be lost.  Matthew 18:15-20 is a procedure for reconciliation with a brother.

Forgiveness and reconciliation is of course incumbent upon every disciple of the Lord. We are reminded of this in passages that talk about forgiving (Matthew 18:21-22) and reconciling with another on a legal dispute (Matthew 5:25f), among others. But in Matthew 18:15-17, it is clear that among members of the Body of Christ, a process that is motivated by love should be carried out in cases where a relationship has been wounded.

The Church — the Body of Christ — is the agent of reconciliation. When a brother has offended one, the offended party makes the first moves towards reconciliation (v. 15). If the offending party does not listen, then Deuteronomy 19:15 is effected (v.16). Finally, if the offending party still resists reconciliation, he is reported to the assembly, the Church itself. If even that fails to move him to reconciliation, it is then that he is treated as "a Gentile or a publican," that is, as someone to be saved. (Read the whole article here.)

1Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab upon mount Nebo, to the top of Phasga over against Jericho: and the Lord shewed him all the land of Galaad as far as Dan.
2And all Nephtali, and the land of Ephraim and Manasses, and all the land of Juda unto the furthermost sea,
3And the south part, and the breadth of the plain of Jericho the city of palm trees as far as Segor.
4And the Lord said to him: This is the land, for which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying: I will give it to thy seed. Thou hast seen it with thy eyes, and shalt not pass over to it.
5And Moses the servant of the Lord died there, in the land of Moab, by the commandment of the Lord:
6And he buried him in the valley of the land of Moab over against Phogor: and no man hath known of his sepulchre until this present day.
7Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died: his eye was not dim, neither were his teeth moved.
8And the children of Israel mourned for him in the plains of Moab thirty days: and the days of their mourning in which they mourned for Moses were ended.
9And Josue the son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom, because Moses had laid his hands upon him. And the children of Israel obeyed him, and did as the Lord commanded Moses.
10And there arose no more a prophet in Israel like unto Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face,
11In all the signs and wonders, which he sent by him, to do in the land of Egypt to Pharao, and to all his servants, and to his whole land,
12And all the mighty hand, and great miracles, which Moses did before all Israel.

15But if thy brother shall offend against thee, go, and rebuke him between thee and him alone. If he shall hear thee, thou shalt gain thy brother.
16And if he will not hear thee, take with thee one or two more: that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may stand.
17And if he will not hear them: tell the church. And if he will not hear the church, let him be to thee as the heathen and publican.
18Amen I say to you, whatsoever you shall bind upon earth, shall be bound also in heaven; and whatsoever you shall loose upon earth, shall be loosed also in heaven.
19Again I say to you, that if two of you shall consent upon earth, concerning any thing whatsoever they shall ask, it shall be done to them by my Father who is in heaven.
20For where there are two or three gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
