Today’s Readings

  • Reading I:  Daniel 7:9-10.13-14
  • Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 97
  • Reading II: 2 Peter 1:16-19
  • Gospel Reading: Matthew 17:1-9

The first reading from Daniel 7:9-10.13-14 is a vision of God’s council chamber and great event that occurs there: the coming of one like a Son of Man receiving glory, dominion and kingship. Jesus uses this description of himself when he tells his accusers from the Sanhedrin that He will come in a cloud with power. The glory that Daniel saw was also seen by Peter, James and John on the mountain when Jesus was transfigured before their eyes.

On the mountain the three of them see the glory of God’s Kingdom shining out of Jesus. On the mountain they are overshadowed by God’s holy cloud. On the mountain — in the conversation of the transfigured Jesus with the Law and the Prophets — they realize that the True Feast of Tabernacles has come. On the mountain they learn that Jesus himself is the Living Torah, the complete Word of God. On the mountain, they see the "power" (dynamis) of the Kingdom that is coming in Christ.

Benedict XVI, Jesus of Nazareth I, 317

Psalm 97 is one of Yahweh’s kingship psalms. His kingship brings joy to all the world since he rules with justice and wisdom.
