The Family of Jesus

In Matthew 12:46-50, Jesus tells everyone who his family is: those who do the will of His Father in Heaven. His statement does not mean that his Mother Mary is unimportant. Before there were any disciples, she was the one who accepted and did the Father’s will by pronouncing her “Fiat” to the Angel’s announcement that she was to be the Mother of the Son of the Most High. Wasn’t she the one who stood beneath the cross and was given to a disciple to be this one’s mother? In John’s gospel, Jesus gives the Beloved Disciple a mother, just as He does even today.

The Church is the family of Jesus. Those who are members of this family are “members” not because of the will of man nor that of the flesh, but because of the will of God. This family must learn to pray “Let your will be done” as Jesus did in Gethsemane the night he was betrayed.

To do the will of the Father in Heaven is not only to listen to Jesus but also to practice His words. Since He is the Son who alone knows the Father and who reveals the secrets of His Heart to those He wishes (Matthew 11:25-27). On the night of the Last Supper, Jesus said to his disciples, “I call you friends because I have told all that I heard from my Father. (John 15:15-16)”

Lectio Divina for the Day

46As he was yet speaking to the multitudes, behold his mother and his brethren stood without, seeking to speak to him.
47And one said unto him: Behold thy mother and thy brethren stand without, seeking thee.
48But he answering him that told him, said: Who is my mother, and who are my brethren?
49And stretching forth his hand towards his disciples, he said: Behold my mother and my brethren.
50For whosoever shall do the will of my Father, that is in heaven, he is my brother, and sister, and mother.
Matthew 11:25-27

25At that time Jesus answered and said: I confess to thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to the little ones.
26Yea, Father; for so hath it seemed good in thy sight.
27All things are delivered to me by my Father. And no one knoweth the Son, but the Father: neither doth any one know the Father, but the Son, and he to whom it shall please the Son to reveal him.
John 15:15-16

15I will not now call you servants: for the servant knoweth not what his lord doth. But I have called you friends: because all things whatsoever I have heard of my Father, I have made known to you.
16You have not chosen me: but I have chosen you; and have appointed you, that you should go, and should bring forth fruit; and your fruit should remain: that whatsoever you shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
