The Son of Man and the Harvest

Revelation 14:14-19 is a transition scene that prepares for the judgment scene that follows in Rev. 15-16 which prepares for the great announcement of the Fall of Babylon in Rev. 17-18. The image of one like a son of man crowned with a sickle that he swings for harvest is an image already familiar to those to hear the Sunday gospels about the harvest. There are several parables that speak of a harvest as especially found in Matthew 13 and parallels. The Son of Man is a figure of judgment and its appearance here in Rev. 14 combines features found in Daniel’s Son of Man as well as those in the gospels.

This Temple Will Be Destroyed

The Temple of Jerusalem, the building that King Herod restored, enlarged and decorated with precious stones, was a massive structure that appeared to all as a permanent and secure monument of the institutions that God established through Moses. The Temple was meant to become the place where everyone who reveres God and recognizes His Messiah will be at home. It is also the House of God, a miniature cosmos that reminded everyone that in Jerusalem is found the "sacrament" of God’s dwelling among men. But as in Jeremiah, the Temple of Jesus’ times had become a source of false security to a religion that was exteriorized and incapable of producing fruits of justice. It is the first of the false securities that will be destroyed at the coming of the Son of Man. The destruction of the Temple in 70 AD is the first of the signs of the Coming of the Day of the Lord.

14And I saw, and behold a white cloud; and upon the cloud one sitting like to the Son of man, having on his head a crown of gold, and in his hand a sharp sickle.
15And another angel came out from the temple crying with a loud voice to him that sat upon the cloud: Thrust in thy sickle, and reap, because the hour is come to reap: for the harvest of the earth is ripe.
16And he that sat on the cloud thrust his sickle into the earth, and the earth was reaped.
17And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle.
18And another angel came out from the altar, who had power over fire; and he cried with a loud voice to him that had the sharp sickle, saying: Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vineyard of the earth; because the grapes thereof are ripe.
19And the angel thrust in his sharp sickle into the earth, and gathered the vineyard of the earth, and cast it into the great press of the wrath of God:

10Say ye among the Gentiles, the Lord hath reigned. For he hath corrected the world, which shall not be moved: he will judge the people with justice.
13Before the face of the Lord, because he cometh: because he cometh to judge the earth. He shall judge the world with justice, and the people with his truth.

5And some saying of the temple, that it was adorned with goodly stones and gifts, he said:
6These things which you see, the days will come in which there shall not be left a stone upon a stone that shall not be thrown down.
7And they asked him, saying: Master, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign when they shall begin to come to pass?
8Who said: Take heed you be not seduced; for many will come in my name, saying, I am he; and the time is at hand: go ye not therefore after them.
9And when you shall hear of wars and seditions, be not terrified: these things must first come to pass; but the end is not yet presently.
10Then he said to them: Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
11And there shall be great earthquakes in divers places, and pestilences, and famines, and terrors from heaven; and there shall be great signs.
