  • Reading I: 2 Timothy 1:1-3.6-12
  • Resp. Psalm:   Ps. 123
  • Gospel Reading: Mark 12:18-27

Today we begin reading from Paul’s second letter to Timothy.  Below are a few links to pages on the web about Timothy, Paul’s co-worker and companion.

In 1:12, there is a passage that Protestants and Catholics translate differently.

… I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day (NIV)

… for I know him whom I have believed and am confident that he is able to guard what has been entrusted to me until that day (NAB)

The difficulty is in the Greek phrase "paratheken mou" which literally means "my deposit" and can be rendered as "what has been entrusted to me" or "what I have entrusted ". The Catholic translation is due to the following verse which also contains the word "paratheken": "Guard the rich deposit (kalen paratheken) through the Holy Spirit which dwells in us (v. 14)." What is this "paratheken", this "trust"? It is the gospel for which Paul has been appointed, the totality of apostolic proclamation about Christ (vv. 10-11), the "sound words" that Timothy has heard from him (v.13). In other words, it is the apostolic tradition and the Scriptures.

The apostles entrusted the "Sacred deposit" of the faith (the depositum fidei) contained in Sacred Scripture and Tradition, to the whole Church. "By adhering to [this heritage] the entire holy people, united to its pastors, remains always faithful to the teaching of the apostles, to the brotherhood, to the breaking of the bread and the prayers. …" (CCC 84)

1Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the will of God, according to the promise of life, which is in Christ Jesus.
2To Timothy my dearly beloved son, grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from Christ Jesus our Lord.
3I give thanks to God, whom I serve from my forefathers with a pure conscience, that without ceasing, I have a remembrance of thee in my prayers, night and day.
Mark 12:18-27

18And there came to him the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying:
19Master, Moses wrote unto us, that if any man's brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed to his brother.
20Now there were seven brethren; and the first took a wife, and died leaving no issue.
21And the second took her, and died: and neither did he leave any issue. And the third in like manner.
22And the seven all took her in like manner; and did not leave issue. Last of all the woman also died.
23In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise again, whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her to wife.
24And Jesus answering, saith to them: Do ye not therefore err, because you know not the scriptures, nor the power of God?
25For when they shall rise again from the dead, they shall neither marry, nor be married, but are as the angels in heaven.
26And as concerning the dead that they rise again, have you not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spoke to him, saying: I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?
27He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You therefore do greatly err.
