That You May Be With Me

There are two affirmations in today’s gospel reading (John 14:1–6) that we can reflect on.

The first is Jesus’ saying that he would come back for the disciples and take them with Him so that hey can be where he is.  The statement echoes John 12:26

Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be.

So at the beginning of His Hour, Jesus expresses his intentions of “coming back” so that finally, his servants can be with Him.  Note however that those called “servant” in John 12:26 will be promoted to “friends” and finally to “brothers” towards the end of the Gospel of John.  During the rest of the Last Supper discourses, Jesus will be introducing some more ideas about the way he will be coming back.  In the Gospel of John, Jesus does not entirely remove himself from his disciples:  he makes his dwelling among them (cf. John 15), and he continues to stand in their midst every time they come together as Church (cf. John 20).

The second saying is Jesus’ declaration of himself as “the Way, the Truth and the Life”.  With this statement, he actually summarizes all that can be said about the Word of God, which is the dominant theme of the Johanine Gospel.  The Word of God is the Light that shines on all men; it is Life-giving and it reveals the Inner Life of God.  Jesus reveals to all the Way to the Father which he himself is.  By attaching oneself to Jesus, one cannot be swallowed up in Darkness or in Death.

10Do you not believe, that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words that I speak to you, I speak not of myself. But the Father who abideth in me, he doth the works.
11Believe you not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me?

23Jesus answered, and said to him: If any one love me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him, and will make our abode with him.
24He that loveth me not, keepeth not my words. And the word which you have heard, is not mine; but the Father's who sent me.
25These things have I spoken to you, abiding with you.
26But the Paraclete, the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring all things to your mind, whatsoever I shall have said to you.
27Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, do I give unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be afraid.
28You have heard that I said to you: I go away, and I come unto you. If you loved me, you would indeed be glad, because I go to the Father: for the Father is greater than I.
29And now I have told you before it comes to pass: that when it shall come to pass, you may believe.
