Harvest Time
- Reading I: Revelation 14:14-19
- Resp. Psalm: Psalm 96:10,13
- Gospel Reading: Luke 21:5-11
Revelation 14:14-19 is a transition scene that prepares for the judgment scene that follows in Rev. 15-16 which prepares for the great announcement of the Fall of Babylon in Rev. 17-18. The image of one like a son of man crowned with a sickle that he swings for harvest is an image already familiar to those to hear the Sunday gospels about the harvest. There are several parables that speak of a harvest as especially found in Matthew 13 and parallels. The Son of Man is a figure of judgment and its appearance here in Rev. 14 combines features found in Daniel’s Son of Man as well as those in the gospels.
The judgment scene unfolds with the key word "cup of God’s wrath" in Rev. 15-16 (see 15:7, 16:1,19;). It is supplied from the harvest of grapes from the earth, an image of the vindication of the just (cf. Revelation 19:1-6)
