"My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it." (Luke 8:21)

It is certain than when Jesus said this, he did not mean to discredit his mother.  After all, in the Gospel of Luke it is Mary who first accepts and does the will of God at the Anunciation (Luke 1:38).  The same goes for the other passage where Jesus responding to a woman who has just pronounced a berakah over his mother, said:

"Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it." (Luke 11:27-28)

In both these occassions, Mary — she who said "All generations will call me blessed" — is confirmed as to his status as the first disciple of the Lord and the model of discipleship for the Church.

The emphasis in the gospel on hearing the word of God and acting on it, draws our attention to the fact that in the household of Jesus, it is faith that counts, not lineage nor biological relationships.

Jesus calls us "brothers" (Hebrews 2:11)  because by his death and resurrection he has created us into a new family for God — a family, not by flesh and blood, but through the will of God.

Below is an illustration of some of the texts that readily come up to me thinking of the phrase "hearing the Word and keeping/acting on it"

From the above, it becomes clear how the Gospel reading links to the wise man in the selection from Proverbs. Because he obeys the Torah and lives his life as one devoted to the Lord, the blessings intended for those who are under God’s covenant are poured on him.

1As the divisions of waters, so the heart of the king is in the hand of the Lord: whithersoever he will he shall turn it.
2Every way of a man seemeth right to himself: but the Lord weigheth the hearts.
3To do mercy and judgment, pleaseth the Lord more than victims.
4Haughtiness of the eyes is the enlarging of the heart: the lamp of the wicked is sin.
5The thoughts of the industrious always bring forth abundance: but every sluggard is always in want.
6He that gathereth treasures by a lying tongue, is vain and foolish, and shall stumble upon the snares of death.
10The soul of the wicked desireth evil, he will not have pity on his neighbour.
11When a pestilent man is punished, the little one will be wiser: and if he follow the wise, he will receive knowledge.
12The just considereth seriously the house of the wicked, that he may withdraw the wicked from evil.
13He that stoppeth his ear against the cry of the poor, shall also cry himself and shall not be heard.

27And it came to pass, as he spoke these things, a certain woman from the crowd, lifting up her voice, said to him: Blessed is the womb that bore thee, and the paps that gave thee suck.

11For both he that sanctifieth, and they who are sanctified, are all of one. For which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren, saying:
